Markenfield Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 3AD

Three miles south of Ripon, tucked privately away down a mile-long winding drive, stands one of the most astonishing and romantic of Yorkshire's medieval houses.
Built defensively in 1310 by Edward II's Chancellor to the Exchequer John de Markenfield, it is still completely moated - and privately owned.
Rarely open to visitors until 2001, this year the Hall can be visited by the public on just 28 afternoons or as part of an organised group at almost any other time.
