What Shops Would Ripon Benefit From Having In The New Development

Wednesday 10 September

In the last week it has been announced that Argos will soon be moving into the new West of the Marketplace development, which leaves the question of who else will be joining them?

Alongside the new Booths supermarket, which promises to offer shoppers high end grocery shopping, we already know that one of the retail units will be taken up by Argos.

We think this is a good move as Ripon needs a store like Argos as it is these national chain stores that people will travel to other towns to shop at. The products that Argos sell are wide ranging which might impede on local shops, but if people want to buy from the Argos catalogue it's better for them to stay in Ripon rather that going elsewhere.

So this now poses the question of who will be taking up the other retail units, and also it's interesting to find out peoples views on what shops we are lacking that make locals travel to Harrogate or York on a Saturday.

For us at Ripon Internet, a big loss to Ripon was when Choices closed, which meant that there was no where to rent DVD's or games, or to be able to buy from a huge selection of pre-owned and new titles. Yes we have Woolworths but on many occasion we have been at the till waiting to pay for a DVD, with the case in our hands, only to be told its out of stock!

Another shop that we would love to see in Ripon is a big sports shop. Ripon has many local sports teams who need clothing and equipment, but people have to travel to other towns to get a new pair of football boots or some Adidas tracksuit bottoms for instance.

So what other stores would you like to see in the new development. Is it more national chain stores that we should hope to attract, or more specialist locally run shops?

You can have your say here, or vote in the poll on the home page of Ripon Internet.

1. (Friday 26 September) I agree with a shop to replace Choices ...... Woolies in town misses a good market buy having shelves full of DVD's and Games though all the same, so what looks a lot is in fact a limited selection .... and the is it in or not gamble!

2. (Saturday 27 September) We desperately need popular high street shops, top shop, body shop, faith, dune, miss selfridge, river island etc. It's ridiculous having to trail to Harrogate everytime you want a trendy top/jeans/shoes/belt/bag etc for a night out. Plus these type of shops are great for birthday presents, Xmas presents etc. Everyone loves Top Shop not just teenagers, just watch Lorraine Kelly on GMTV for proof. What is the point of Ripon people even bothering to watch fashion programmes on tv like Ten years younger, Gok Wan etc when you can't recreate the looks as you don't have the shops in Ripon to do it and by the time you travel to Harroagte you have spent an extra £10 on travel? High street fashion shops are the only way to keep people in Ripon and that's coming from someone who owns a shop in the city themself!

3. (Friday 17 October) How about another cafe? There aren't nearly enough of them in town. And perhaps a handful of national multiple chain stores, since the independent shops that remain refuse to go out of business fast enough. Top it all off with a charity shop and a hairdressers and it will be perfect! Ripon will then look just like every other town in Britain and I will be able to dress just like everybody else! Baaaaaa!

4. (Sunday 16 November) You can rent DVDS at the library!!! £2.25 and the loan period is a week!! They have almost all the top titles, many more obscure films and Tv series AND if you're unable to find what you need they well willingly search all the other libraries selections and transport the reqested film to Ripon branch free of charge, all you need pay is the £2.25. I cannot believe that so many people in ripon are unaware of this!
